The Difference Between Seasoned Firewood, Kiln-Dried Firewood, and Green Firewood

At Ridgeback Firewood, we offer three types of firewood to meet your needs. The differences between them are:

  • Seasoned Firewood: Seasoned firewood often sits in the elements for a year before someone buys it. Many firewood sellers do not move these piles, only making the outer layer dry. This can lead to inconsistency and varying quality. At Ridgeback Firewood, we always work to keep this wood dry and never let it touch the ground before and during the seasoning process.

  • Kiln-Dried Firewood: Kiln-dried firewood is often the best choice, as it has less than 20% moisture content. This low moisture makes it quick to light and allows it to burn cleaner. Our own kiln at Ridgeback Firewood makes it easy to keep up with demand.

  • Green Firewood: This is wood that we have recently cut and has had minimal drying time. This wood typically has the highest moisture content at over 50%. Green firewood is difficult to light and produces more smoke than other options.

Ridgeback Firewood’s Kiln-Drying Process

Our kiln-dried firewood is split directly into our kiln's cages, so it never touches the ground. This also helps us avoid any dirt or debris on the wood. While kiln-drying, large fans circulate the air, ensuring each piece dries to the appropriate moisture level before it is sent to any of our customers.

Firewood Delivery

We deliver firewood throughout the Greater Baltimore Area, with no extra charge if you are within a 10-mile radius of our Kingsville, MD, location. For everything over that, we charge a delivery fee of $4 per round-trip mile. Don’t worry, we’ll outline the cost before we confirm your order.

When you place your order, you’ll have to specify a delivery location. Please ensure you have enough room for the wood, as it can often take up much more space than people realize. You’ll also have to ensure we can access the delivery location with our large trucks.

We’ll schedule your delivery as our equipment and crews are available.

As an alternative, we also have a self-serve station where homeowners can take advantage of the wide selection of local hardwoods we have. This wood comes in various sizes and quantities. To ensure we have some available, please call ahead.

Frequently Asked Questions About Firewood in the Greater Baltimore Area

While the space will vary slightly depending on how tightly you stack it, in general, the space required for firewood looks like this:

  • ¼ of a Cord: 2’x4’x4’ (32 cubic feet)
  • ½ of a Cord: 4’x4’x4’ (64 cubic feet)
  • 1 Cord: 4’x4’x8’ (128 cubic feet)

When you stack it, remember to leave some space between logs to allow for air to circulate. We follow the adage, “A mouse should be able to scurry between the pieces, but a cat shouldn't be able to follow.”

Yes, depending on our availability, we can offer you a specific species for smoking or other needs. The species we offer include:

  • Oak
  • Hickory
  • Cherry
  • Sassafras
  • Pear
  • Apple

Depending on the size of the logs, a full cord of wood will typically include about 600-800 logs.

Some of the ways to determine if the firewood is seasoned correctly include:

  • Color: Wood should have a dull gray color
  • Bark: A sure sign that firewood is dry bark that is falling off the wood
  • Cracks: As wood dries, it will begin to split on the ends and display cracks
  • Touch: Fresh-cut wood may feel wet to the touch

Buying local firewood has several benefits, such as:

  • Supporting the local economy
  • Reusing trees that had to be removed in the area
  • Limiting the risk of spreading diseases or invasive insects to your area

Invasive insects that harm trees can hide inside firewood – even if it looks clean. Moving firewood from one place to another (like taking it on a camping trip or bringing it home from far away) can accidentally spread these pests. To protect our local forests, the safest choice is to buy firewood near where you plan to use it.
